The One Habit That Can Land You That Job Promotion!

When you think of the benefits of exercise, disease prevention, heart health, and, (if we are being honest) a hotter body are most likely top of mind. That said, the benefits of exercise go beyond physical health. The increasing interest in the effects of regular exercise has led to multiple studies which found strong evidence pointing towards another very important benefit of exercise: increased brainpower.

Specifically, these studies have shown that exercising regularly can:

  • Improve concentration
  • Improve mental health
  • Enhance creativity
  • Boost your memory
  • Speed up your learning curve
  • Slow cognitive decline

If you examine the list above, you will most likely be able to conclude that there is a very strong correlation between the mental benefits of exercise and workplace performance. Not only will you be completing tasks with more accuracy, efficiency, and creativity, but the endorphins from working out will also help you be less stressed and in a generally better mood. As Elle Woods says; 

"Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands."

Happy people are also easier to work with, so if your job requires you to build relationships and collaborate with others endorphins can be your key.

If you're sold on the research, here are a few ways to start your journey:

1. FIND WORKOUTS YOU ENJOY

Finding something you enjoy is the key to seeing things through. When people tell me they hate working out, I tell them that they just haven't found the right workout for them. Try a bunch of different exercises until you find one that makes you understand why people fall in love with fitness.

2. HAVE A REASON

Studies show that people who exercise for general health are more likely to stick to their workout routines than people who exercise to look good. Yes, we all want to look good, but coming up with a reason to workout other than weight loss can help you stick to your program. If you can't think of one off the top of your head, try the stats on increased brainpower listed above to motivate you.

3. MAKE IT A PRIORITY

When you are "too busy to workout," it is usually the time you need it most. Exercise can help you manage stress, so even if it is a quick walk during lunch, make it a priority to get up and move. I promise you will thank yourself after!

4. SET A GOAL

Use your reason from step 2 to set a goal. Setting goals will help you push through those days where you are feeling sluggish and don't want to do anything. 

5. GRAB A WORKOUT PARTNER

Working out with a friend is not only fun, it is a great way to keep on track. Having a friend to keep you accountable and maybe even push you with a little friendly competition can help you hit your goals faster.

6. BUY A WORKOUT PROGRAM OR GET A TRAINER

If you want to get better results, faster, find a workout program that you can follow. Studies show that people who spend money on a workout program or get a personal trainer are more likely to lose weight. Think of it in terms of those $10 vs. $150 sunglasses. In the past, I thought it was silly to buy expensive sunglasses since I would always lose them, break them, or scratch them to the point where they become worthless. But two years ago I decided to splurge a little on a nice pair of glasses. Two years later I still have the glasses and they are in perfect condition. We tend to follow, stick with, or take care of things we pay more for.
